Sombre blues are used in Lorenz's home to denote feelings of despair whereas more vibrant yellows and reds are used outside in liviler, happier scenes. The use of colour tinting particularly stands out too. The use of jagged, angular structures looming above is more prominent in Phantom too, in one Inception-esque scene of camera trickery they are seen folding over onto the street, quite literally oppressing Lorenz. The lighting is highly evocative of paintings, some of which were inspiration to recreate certain shots such as Lorenz's mother sitting destitute at a table. The locations and sets aren't particularly outstanding but the way Murnau shoots them is done with great genius and foresight. ![]() ![]() Innovative and poetic visuals turn this otherwise overlong melodrama into thematically rich storytelling.
